WATCH: Dapper Dan | Harlem – Style Flashback

I was thrilled to see a video chronicling Dapper Dan’s style and fashion history. It really took me back to the days when I wanted an MCM hat and purse, albeit I was around 10 years old, I knew what I wanted, the craving for luxury items and eye-catching pieces started early and Dapper Dan was partially behind it.

I can remember the days when I would sneak and watch my brother watching rap videos of Salt n Pepa, Big Daddy Kane, MC Lyte, LL Cool J, Roxanne Shante (to name a few) rapping and dancing; those videos and magazines (Word Up!) molded my style. Memories of being disappointed because my mom scoffed at getting me the MCM bag (the tan & black one to be exact) and my brother drawing the logo (he was a great artist) on a paper bag and giving it to me flooded my head while viewing Dapper Dan reliving the moments when rappers, athletes and hustlers came to him for designs.

Check it out below.

Thanks to Life + Times for this exclusive interview. Dapper Dan also has a website, check it out here.

What molded your style? Perhaps you have some childhood memories about your style that you’d like to share. Spill it.

  1. Aw, to your brother drawing the ‘bag’ for you! So sweet! Would you rock an MCM bag now? I like them in the girly colors.

I’m obsessed with Life + Times, too! I really like what they are doing with the site.

Girl, my brother made me so mad! He was the typical older brother that wanted a brother instead of a sister, haha. I’d definitely rock one, probably that classic one since that one was the one I wanted. You’re right, Life + Times puts out great content, I love the direction they’re going in.
