The Glossies: Solange Mixes Well for Madewell

I’m baaaaaack. Did you miss me? I enjoyed my first WWD MAGIC Tradeshow in Vegas and I’ll be sharing some gems I picked up while visiting. First things first though, I missed some fashion and style news so I’m playing catch up. Which leads me to this post…

A few weeks ago we were oohing and gasping over the ONLY photo Madewell released when they announced that Solange was the new face of their fall campaign; Mix Well, Madewell. It left us itching to see more. We, well at least, I, admire her uptown chic with a healthy helping of downtown cool style. She’s one of the best at mixing patterns and hues together that most style admirers would never fathom; so it made perfect sense for her to be Madewell’s new girl!

Put the itching to see the entire campaign to rest, the images are here and it’s… Well take a look at it below.

Great styling, I’d love to have just about every piece in my closet! Did you notice the nOir jewelry in the mix? I spied necklaces from their L.A.M.B. collaboration collection. So dope, I’m a huge nOir jewelry admirer!

Solange gave us so much “cool, around the way girl” attitude in this campaign, I was looking for the bamboo earrings, Fendi bag and baby hair. Ok, maybe not all of those, but you get it. She recently did a brief Q&A on Madewell’s Tumblr, which pretty much solidified her chic, uptown-downtown, disjunctive style that suits her with a capital “S”. Get into it below.

Describe your personal style in three words.
I. Can’t. Describe.

How about in a song title?
“Extraordinary Machine” by Fiona Apple.

You’re fearless when it comes to mixing and matching. Any advice on how to do it well?
It’s all about experimenting and instinct. Believe me, every once in a while, I might change clothes four times before I leave the house. You gotta play around until you can say, “OK, this works for me.” But you’ll never know until you try!

Do any past outfits make you say, “What was I thinking?”
I’ve worked some pretty outrageous things in the past—just Google “Fashion Rocks Solange.” But, hey, at least I went for it. Isn’t that what being in your ’20s is all about?

Top style icons?
“Queen Ross” (also known as Diana Ross), Erykah Badu, Fela Kuti’s queens, Björk, Lauryn Hill.

You have five minutes to get dressed. What do you throw on?
A white silk blouse (my saving grace—I own eight or so), a comfy colorful skirt and a simple nude sandal.

What’s your favorite style of jean?
Baggy boyfriend jeans rolled up on the bottom. Comfy, easy and playful!

Did you have an imaginary friend as a child?
I actually had an entire imaginary family named the Pintos. In my mind, they owned the best everything, so whenever my mother wouldn’t give me what I wanted, I’d tell her the Pintos let their daughter have it. I was guilt-tripping on a whole other level!

What recent books and films have you been loving?
For movies: Bernie, Being Elmo, Tomboy, Pariah and Beast of the Southern Wild. And books: Freedom by Jonathan Franzen, Little Bee by Chris Cleave and Zelda by Nancy Milford.

Solange is the epitome of “Mix Well. Madewell.” Some pieces from the campaign have started trickling in, and word on the street is everything should be in stores by September 4th. Are there any items on your must-have list?
