If you’ve been an eclechick reader or follow me on twitter, you already know that I fell in love with Sarah Burton’s Alexander McQueen Spring Summer 2012 Collection. Just in case you forgot, here’s a quick reminder. You also know that I have a long-standing love affair with nail polish, nail art…pretty much anything nail related; last month Saks relaunched their POV Blog with some fairly interesting posts. But, there was one that immediately pulled me in, virtually grabbing me by collar and demanding my attention: Nailing It. It discussed the recent runway trek of spring and summer collections. A pity, designers unleash lovely creations that can’t be worn, adored or admired in reality until months later; but hey, that’s the fashion tale. Well, the ladies at Saks had a quick remedy, rocking manicures with nail art inspired by the spring and summer collections! Instant heart palpitations! All of the nail art was amazing, but there was one in particular that had me mesmorized, cue Faith Evans “Mesmorized” song.
Dope right?! Instant bliss quickly flooded my thoughts, that collection was the epitome of fashion without limitations. A whimsical runway delight. The model’s nails reminded me of this look…
Who was behind that lovely nail art? Mayu Glazer, manicurist at Sharon Dorram Color at Sally Hershberger in NYC. She delivered an Alexander McQueen-esque manicure that piqued my interest. An appointment was made well in advance and the anticipation grew as my appointment date grew nearer. I forgot to mention, the day I made my appointment, Mayu called me to inquire about what design I wanted. I couldn’t believe it,I was actually speaking to this nail mastermind on the phone! Lets just say I was stoked.
The day finally arrived and my expectations were exceeded. Sharon Dorram Color is exquisitely appointed, beautiful is an understatement. The receptionist at the front desk welcomed me with warmth along with a hot cup of tea (requested it). After relaxing for a bit (I arrived early, another sign of my excitement), I was greeted by Mayu and we bounded upstairs to her “nail chateau”. Glazer’s area is breathtaking, mirrors all around and a wonderful wall of Deborah Lippmann and Chanel lacquers.
Mayu, 37 was born in Tokyo and has lived in North Carolina (where I currently reside) and Texas; just to name a few. She’s been doing nails for a long time and thoroughly enjoys doing nail art. Working under the tutelage of celebrated manicurist Deborah Lippmann, Mayu’s talent was quickly recognized, resulting in celebrity house calls and her work appearing in the pages of German Vogue, Vogue India, Martha Stewart Living, Interview and W. -Sharon Dorram Color
We chatted about my current location, where she was from, her time in North Carolina, nail art and a ton of other things while my hands soaked in warm water, received her meticulous shaping, much needed cuticle clean-up and a relaxing hand massage. Since the cold weather has arrived, my nails have been breaking after Mayu got finished all signs of horrible nails were buffed away. Then she got down to business. Instead of the coral color shown on the model, I opted for black. She based my nails and then applied Tiny Dancer (a sheer, healthy pink) by Deborah Lippmann shortly after tipping each nail with Fade to Black (a shiny, creme black) by Deborah Lippmann.
She then began doing each design by hand with black acrylic paint, a thin brush and a dotting tool. I admire nail art done by hand and she really took her time, ensuring each nail was neat. After watching her, I believe applying dots on my own nails will be a breeze. I happened to come across one at Sephora the other day, can’t wait to get my dot on! Now, I won’t be a Mayu, but I’ll try my best to use her dotting method. Are you ready for my nails?
Words can’t express how much I LOVE my nails!! I don’t ever want them to chip. Mayu is my nail goddess! She’s a true sweetheart, I love her! The design is impeccably detailed and unlike any nail art I’ve ever received, from now on when I visit NYC, an appointment with Mayu will be made. Unless I move there, then she’ll definitely have a client as long as she’s doing nails.
