I finally saw the Bill Cunningham New York film, it was a captivating, insightful, delightful and in some cases-somber movie. Above all things the film affirmed why I admire Bill so much. If you haven’t seen it, DO IT! I happened to catch it on demand, which allowed me the freedom to snuggle up on my couch, pause it, rewind it, et cetera, et cetera. While watching the movie, my trusty little notepad was by my side (you never know when a statement will hit you) and sure enough a statement hit me; hard!
Iris Apfel, a fashion muse, jewelry designer and former interior designer was in the film. Something she said resonated deeply in my thoughts; “I see myself as the world’s oldest living teenager, cause I have such a good time, and I try to get as much kick out of things as possible.”
Iris has a disjunctive style that suits her personality, which seems to be her way of expressing her teenager-esque persona. Her interviews, outlook on things and advice ooze positivity, excitement and wisdom. We all need that type of attitude. Her self-description of being, “the oldest living teenager” made me think of my nail polish obsession. My love affair with nail polish began in my pre-teen years and has NEVER ended. Delight flushes throughout my soul when I see nail colors and nail art that I dig. I have fun with different designs, colors and concepts. Just imagine applying that “get as much kick out of things” mindset to everything you do, of course there will be a bit of refinement, but making the best out of things and really enjoying what you’re doing seems to be a recurring notion amongst successful people.
There’s no doubting the fact that Bill loves what he does. Bill is the grandfather of street style. He has an eye for capturing captivating pieces and ensembles in an organic setting. He adores the cut, color and fit of garments and accessories, that adoration can be seen in his photos and heard in his voice. He’s getting a kick out of what he does and it shows.
You’re probably thinking, “How did she get all of that from a documentary on a street style photographer?” Easy, watching his work ethic and listening. Fashion/style isn’t just about the outer layer… Let’s all strive to be the oldest living teenager and begin enjoying what we’re doing.

This is on my must see list as well!
You'll love it.
You are so right about successful people doing what they really love. I have read that and heard so many people who are successful and happy that you know it has to be the number one rule.
I am going to have to add this to my must watch list.
You'll love it Sharon, so inspiring. So much more than just a "fashion" film. I agree, it must be the number one rule.
Bravo this was brilliant I to will have to see this movie! Great piece : )
Thanks Teko.
I loved this film and how inspiring it was to see someone stay true to themselves and their craft. I am a bit sad that he didn't seem to have a companion or family he was especially close too. I don't want him to be lonely
Oh Channing, I was sad too, I cried (I'm a big cry baby). I enjoyed seeing him interact with his neighbors in Carnegie Hall, their relationship was genuinely sweet; I didn't want them to move out either.
